Dog metabolic stuff (Cushings, DIabetes, Addisons) are things I don't know too well. Cattle patients with these conditions went to the butcher, dog patients with these were treated with fluids/antibiotics until the smarter SA doctor returned! I am decidedly weak in this department. I think he could spill sugar in the urine if he is stressed, and ketones too if he's been off feed. Does he have RBC+WBC in the urine?
Prostate trouble can be recurrent, hard to knock out and make a dog really sick. Usually, with prostate, there's some drama about pooping, standing there pushing, or squat, move a little, try again.
A foreign body--could be. How about a barium swallow? Could rule out tumors and pyloric stenosis too. (I'm not thinking tumor, they don't come and go)
Do these vomiting episodes correlate with applying Frontline or giving Heartworm meds? Is he on daily NSAIDS?
Thank you, Dr Betty and Connie, for your replies! I do appreciate the time spent sharing your knowledge.
We are back from the vet and he does have another UTI to be treated with 6 weeks of Baytril. Also did an ultrasound specifically looking for stones and at the prostate, no findings there. The physical exam also unremarkable. Just as Dr Betty stated the positive finding for ketones is believed to be more stress related. He'll go back on Tues for ACTH stim test to rule out atypical addison's disease and at that time I'll ask about pyloric stenosis.
I'm just glad that he's not as sick as the last episode. It appears that it is a UTI without another cause. Which is good and now to get my brain to accept that! Thanks much!
