Greedy vets bum me out. They suck. I just spent>$500 for an orthopedic exam and xrays that proved NOTHING. Pretty frustrating. I get that.
But, you've got to remember that it's a war out there, trying to beat back infectious disease. These agents, Lepto, Rabies, Kennel Cough, Distemper, Parvo -- these are REAL bad guys, like terrorists are real, like 9-11 was real. These bugs have been formulated by nature over millions of years for the sole purpose of infecting your dog. And YOU too. Lepto would find you a perfect host, and bordetella pertussis, 1st cousin to bordetella brontiseptica, is whooping cough, a disease that used to kill thousands of children.
The science isn't perfect. Is any war perfect?
So suggesting that vets just want money is a little like suggesting that soldiers just like killing. We are both just trying to fight enemies with the tools available.
For the record, I don't think Lepto vaccine, Bordetella Vaccine, or Lyme vaccine probably work very well. For some reason we don't know it's hard to protect against these larger bacterial/rickettsial/spirochete bugs which are not tiny like virus. Rabies vaccine and distemper vaccine work. The vaccine reactions that occur there have to be looked on a little like civilian casualties, since the # of dogs
protected from CD and Rabies suffering is way more than those hurt by vaccine reaction.
Sorry for the rant. Please don't boot me off! It's just sometimes I get the feeling that people think vets "make up" diseases for their own profit -- well, that's just not so, the enemies are real.
You are correct.
I wish I could take back my post.
Dogs are entertainment, war is real.
There is absolutely no real similarities.
I spend too much time alone.
You are 100% correct in everything that you write, 100%.
Vaccines, when used responsibly, are wonderful. Now, though, we are heading for a trend over WAY over vaccinating in both frequency, and diseases vaccinated for. Just like the very loose usage of antibiotics.
We aren't doing ourselves any favors by doing this.
This is where some lose trust in our vets and doctors. The ones that should know better. But it is easy to forget that they only know what they are taught. This goes above them.
It's just sometimes I get the feeling that people think vets "make up" diseases for their own profit -- well, that's just not so.
I think that is partially true. There are a lot of good vets or MD's and there are also a lot of under-eduacted ones. Then there are a lot of people looking for a cheap, quick fix for their pets or humans, a lot believe that a pill will cure anything and then they're mad when it doesn't work after refusing any type of work up. I can totally see how it becomes a vicous circle mixing educated/under-educated professionals and educated/uneducated clientele. I also think that some professionals should know better, but I also think people need to take some responsiblity and become involved. Plus medical science is rarely black and white. Finances is a hard thing to control and does have to factor in there some where with the unexpected illnesses.
I guess my point is that the people seeking medical services need to be more active or at least more realistic. Maybe comparable or not, but it is like those that own a dog and allow unruley behavior and then expect someone to come in and make the dog behave after a 6 week class and they only work the dog during class. People can be quick to blame professionals when they do minimal or nothing.

"Dogs are entertainment" ?
Based on the PMs I'm getting about this thread and also this line*, let's close the thread with the assumption that foot-in-mouth took over here and that if we need more Lepto and/or vets discussion, we can start a new one.
Really -- feel free to start a new one. This one is headed nowhere fast.
PS "Sorry for the rant. Please don't boot me off!" No way. Just a thread that got off on the way wrong foot .....
