The two tests he performed were the Slit Lamp Biomicroscopy and Indirect Ophthalmoscopy and the Schirmer tear quantification (I knew that without checking the spelling on the invoice... not.)
Honestly, I believe the diagnosis was based on ruling "out" as much as anything, but I honestly don't know how one would accurately diagnose an immune conjunctivitis vs a "regular" one. He commented that GSDs are prone to this and it normally hits around 2-3 years...
Falcon has been more itchy lately with a bit more pink to the ears in the last week - more so than what he has had recently. Four days ago in the AM when getting him out of his crate I noticed he had nibbled/chewed a small are on his hip. I shaved it down and put some goldbond powder on it. That seemed to help - he hasn't bothered it since but is still itchier than I think is normal.
The opthamologist and I discussed this - he noted the pinker ears, nibbled hip spot, etc... but he still wanted me to go through my regular vet for the referral to the allergist - which of course I'm doing.
I've dealt with allergies with a dear yellow lab in the past and know what a pain they are... she recieved regular injections at home and still had minor issues (sure wish I knew about feeding RAW back then...) Best case scenario, perhaps this is partly / all seasonal allergies?
I sincerely appreciate the input... I trust doctors/vets but know why we call it "practicing medicine" - it is not an exact science. Having you guys to bounce things off of and get feedback is really helpful. Thanks.
