A couple of quotes from the article: "At presstime, a planning meeting is slated for November to bring leaders in practice and industry together in an attempt to carve out a series of strategies to help reverse a trend of dwindling client visits. "
"Heartworm prevention represents a huge opportunity for practitioners, Payne says, especially if the profession can improve compliance rates and convert pet owners who are not currently giving heartworm preventives to their pets. In fact, he believes a wholesale push could offset losses from flea and tick product revenue for practices. "
Thanks for the article. When reading the article my first thought was their emphasis was focused on decreased visits and was a bit put off by the yet again sale of a product for the staple income. I understand the need to make money to pay staff, purchase equipment, etc. but I see them first as a service profession, and secondary retail.
It didn't read as whoa heartworm positive cases are up or testing is down r/t to patient load and sales are down, we need to focus on education -- sell product to protect the pet. Maybe I skipped a paragraph, if not I'm not sure this is not going to 'win' the trust of the consumer.
The one thing that my vet does that I really appreciate is the ability to buy heartworm and flea and tick meds in single doses.
Everytime I am in their someone else seems to be buying a dose or two as well.
I think that selling truly high quality food in their retail spaces would be a good revenue boost as well!
