hi everyone
Ive allways feed my gsd with raised bowls as i was told it helped prevent contortion bloat.I was talking to a workmate today about this and he told me he read that this was now considered to be wrong.
He owns rottweillers and used to feed his dogs with raised bowls but stopped,he had read that this was now thought to be wrong and they should be fed on the ground. What do you think,is this the way to feed gsds and other big breeds.
Huh..... well, I'm glad I read this. I guess I'll ditch the stand. Sad. It wasn't cheap! How strange. It made total sense to me that a raised dish would be easier on them, but I can't see Purdue being wrong.
...learn something new everyday...
While niether of mine get any vigorous exercise til an 1 1/2 to 2 hours after eating, I've read that contortion bloat is as related to genetic predisposition as much as anything else. Rised bowls included.
Myself, I call it bad luck that arises from bad karma.
But no one really knows where it comes from for sure.
It has now been linked (Purdue University Bloat Study) to increased bloat incidence. Your workmate is right.
Here's a link to a vet's blog about bloat.(tangential to this thread) If you scroll down to the comments section (comments 20-27, to get the full effect of the inanity) you can read the inane conversation I had with someone named Elcy, who disparaged the Purdue study and obviously still feeds her dogs from raised bowls. PS, I provided a link to the Purdue study in my comment; you have to copy and paste it into your browser to pull up the study... http://www.petmd.com/blogs/fullyvetted/2010/july/internet_myths
