Been a while since I have posted. Texas is doing great! He and Moe get along very well and everyone has settled into a nice routine.
I do have a concern with my 16+ yr old min pin. She has been going blind in one eye for quite some time now and last week we noticed some pus in the corner of her eye. On closer inspection it looked like her eye had a small hole in the center. Off to the vet we went. She has an ulceration in the eye. One option we discussed was removing the eye, but given her age and her failing health we do not feel this is the best choice for her. She is presently on a course of oral antibiotics as well as antibiotic eye ointment. She will most likely need to be on these the rest of her life. Has anyone else had a similar situation? She has no pain or loss of appetite or changes in her behavior so we do not feel she is ready to leave us just yet. Her eye looks better than it did a week ago, and we were told there is a small possibility that the eye socket will dry up.

Just went through this. My eyeballs-first senior Pug lacerated an eyeball and it became infected and ulcerated and the eyeball even ruptured a little, despite dedicated attention and care.
It took a month of doing things just about every hour, but he is fine now, and even the scar is slowly receding.
I can't overemphasize the stress both my GP vet and the ophthalmologist vet she called placed on sticking with the applications. I made a chart and kept it on the coffee table for the three different things I needed to apply.
Yes there was a rupture also, and we were told the infection is a deep one. We are being vigilant about her meds and are hoping that she can be maintained on the antibiotic therapy. I would appreciate any info you could find.

You are seeing improvement? If not, is there any chance of seeing a vet ophthalmologist? We did not, but my GP vet called one (bless her) and the second topical antibiotic that the specialist recommended (added to what we were doing) was what turned the tide within three days or so.
Yes,
We are seeing an improvement in the appearance of the eye (no pus or swelling). She is on a 2 week course and we have a follow-up appt coming up to re -evaluate her eye and go from there. Hoping for the best.
Thank you for the links. So far Kizzy's eye is responding well on the antibiotic therapy.
Do you think this could happen to the other eye, as this eye appears cloudy also? The vet doesn't seem to think so, but I have noticed she is rubbing that eye.

just a thought, is it possible that the meds she is on for the infected eye might have a side effect that could be causing her other eye to become dry???
You know, kind of like how meds might help with one thing, but cause slight problems in other area's.
