this morning i was riding up the mountain in the gondola with the new pup . on the ground were this seasons bears grazing and i started to wonder , how close gentically are ursus and canus?
I don't know how close they are genetically, but I understand that they have a common ancestor, called "Miacis". From Miacis, Daphneaus, the ancestor of the modern bear, and Cynodictus, the ancestor of canids, evolved.
In somewhere USA there is or was a strange virus stripping the black bear of its body hair. I thought looking at this half naked bear. That the facial features and top portion of his body looks just like a dog. Somewhere down the family tree there was a split, except for being larger they look a lot alike underneath all that hair.
Makes you go hummmm. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />
Much closer to pigs than dogs as I recall...the old timers used to call Black Bears "Hog Bears" and it is pretty easy to mistake one for another on a foggy early morning.
