Just wanted to get some sort of a feeling for this subject from the wiser dog handlers.
What would the benefits be and also the downside to training a dual purpose SAR dog. By that I mean a tracking/air scenting dog.
I would love to teach my next puppy tracking, puppy imprinting, and then go onto allowing him to start air scenting. Or should one start the tracking process and wait till he is tops at that before going onto air scenting.
Your thoughts and comments would be greatly appreciated.
Most SAR k9's are both. Minus the strict tracking breeds like blood hounds. Dogs will naturally use both when looking for a specific scent. So yes train your dog in both.
My three year old was first trained in Air scent and now we are working on tracking. It works great for getting a direction of travel. We work with an established K-9 SAR team. If we have a direction of travel, we will know where to start assigning sectors. It really helps!
