One of my dogs (Connie) is a BC/Lab mix. She is about 4 years old now and has been on Heartguard since we got her when she was about 1 year old. She never had any reaction to Ivermectin.
Could she develop a reaction now after all this time? Or does the lack of reaction mean that the affected gene is not present?
I can't answer that for certain, but my gut feeling is that if it was going to be a problem, it would have been from the beginning. I don't think it develops over time.

Dogs either have the gene mutation or they don't. It's not like allergies. And because such a low dose is effective as HW prevention, it can be safely used even in dogs that have the gene mutation - ivermectin
Also keep in mind that all HW preventatives are in the same class of drug so there really wouldn't be one that was safer even if your dog did have the sensitivity.
FWIW, I am very comfortable using ivermectin as HW preventative with with my border collies.
