I am training my younger GSD in Mondio Ring. She chipped the tip off of one of her molars about 1.5 years ago (she was 3.5 yo at the time), when I took her to a canine dentist, and told the dentist she was training for protection sports, the dentist discouraged extracting the tooth (both due to her young age and bite-work, something about less support for the other teeth when there is one missing). So we ended up with the root canal and crown.
My GSD chipped the tip off of another molar (on the opposite side of the crown), the vet dentist said since the pulp was not exposed, she just put some "protectant" over the tip and told me to bring her back for a re-check in 6-9 months.
I know of another gal in my club whose Pit Bull broke off one of her canines, and she ended up doing the root canal/crown.
I would think if a tooth is missing, with all the mechanical pressure during bite-work, it would put too much stress on the other teeth
Surely, this is not the "right" answer, but I know I've seen lots of old retrievers with teeth like that that were still fetching rocks at an old age. While a root canal and crown are probably indicated, the dog may get by fine with a lessor fix, or maybe even no fix at all.

Thats what someone else mentioned to me on another forum... maybe it can be left alone, until I see signs of infection/abscess. Then again, there's always the possibility that I won't see an infection. I'm a very involved owner, and know my dog well, but there is always the chance I'd miss the warning signs. (if that makes any sense)
