Alright, so I've finally finished reading the marker training ebook. Now my question is: when you have an adult dog who already knows the meaning of certain commands (not from marker training) do (or should) you start over completely from scratch?
As in, both my dogs know "sit" and "down" etc. Do I completely remove said command during the "charging the mark" phase of training and reintroduce the command in the normal progression of the marker training? Or is there some way to incorporate what the dogs already know into our new marker training program?
Unless there's something you want to change about the commands that they know, or the dog has developed a negative association with them, there's no reason to start over from scratch.
Start charging the mark as detailed in the ebook, and once charged, teach an entirely new command to introduce the dog into the basic concepts of marker training.
After the dog understands what the mark is, then you can begin applying the mark to previously learned commands for consistency.
