I didn't know that about Frontline not being systemic.
Gonna have to start reading directions. LOL!
Yes, I think I read about all that on the Frontline Plus website, if I remember correctly.
It was the "selling point", that the animal does not have to be bitten for the product to work; & reasoning behind the fact, that after application, that dogs start to itch like crazy (cats do the dancing around) as the nervous system of the pests are affected & they start hyper-moving, & eventual death.
We had major tick issues where I used to live in Massachusetts. After my female shepherd nearly died from spotted fever I switched to Advantix. It's the only topical treatment that actually repelled the ticks from crawling on the dogs fur. With Frontline plus, ticks (more than a dozen per dog) were coming into the house on the dogs' fur, and also still attaching to the dogs. Another option is the 'Preventic' collar. I didn't use this because my shepherd grabs my husky's neck in play and the collar is toxic to injest. I've heard good things about it repelling ticks, though.
Wouldn't worry about leaving the head in. I've done this half a dozen times and never had a major infection, just a 'zit'. When the tick really burrows in, it's hard to get the whole thing, especially on a smaller size tick.
In my experience, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure when it comes to tick illness. I am so happy to be out of tick country.
I use Revolution. On my last dog, when living on Vancouver Island, I found a LOT of dead ticks on him, and only 1 live one. However, the dead ones had taken a bite. I like the Revolution because it prevents/treats so many things, and I've never had an issue with it.
