I need to get Roger seriously trained at some point soon. I have a tentative connection to a local trainer who is recommended by the breeder Roger came from, but in case that doesn't pan out I would like to have more options.
Attending a Ring-themed training session in CT recently gave me more questions than answers. I'm contacting 'my' trainer in VA to get an exact reminder of what the classes entail, but their basic obedience package does involve eCollar training. I'm not sure about that, and I think it's why I've delayed the training's start date.
The Ring trainer discouraged me from enrolling Roger in anything that would use an eCollar until he was much older. A few Leerburgers have said the same via PM. The local trainer in VA is fairly priced, and has a good reputation in the area. He's convenient for many reasons, but I need to make sure this is getting done right.
"To be honest, it's about a 20 minute speech at the beginning of the first lesson, and I do not have the time to type the ins and outs of it between school, business, and my job. The FAQ on website is about the best I can do!
However, long-story short. For the first 4 weeks, the ecollar is used for all aspects of training/commands. On and off leash. You cannot really just use it for off-leash obedience because the dog has to KNOW how it works before they are off-leash outside. If they don't know how it works, and you take them off-leash, you can go to level 16 and they still won't come because they do not know how it works.
Long-story short, it is used for everything you tell them to do for the first few weeks. If not, they learn it to be a punishment.
As you see in all the videos, all dogs are very happy, and if you read google reviews, the owners will tell you even their dogs love it. As all dogs do when trained PROPERLY with it."

What say you?
I have absolutely nothing against using an ecollar and do in fact use one (mostly for off leash recall enforcement just in case my high prey drive dog decides to blow me off...hey, it can happen).
HOWEVER...
I am totally against "punishment" in the learning phase of training and it sounds like this trainer is doing just that. I find it so much more beneficial to do marker training which teaches the dog WHAT to do, not what not to do, in a very positive way.
