I'm thinking you are up here in Siberia .... If so, not drinking water well gets to be a huge deal in these older horses and leads to impaction.
Yup, Betty, pretty darn close to Siberia... we are about an hour East of the Twin Cities. I am baiting the water with apple cider now, and they should all be drinking more now. The water tank is heated too... nothing is too good for MY horses
Breeze is doing well today I nearly choked on my coffee this morning when I looked out and saw a horse laying down... then I looked again and saw the belly was too big to be her. It was Winchester (the Belgian Moose) snoozing in the hay, and Breeze was behind the hay bale where I couldn't see her.
She ate her breakfast with gusto. We give her and Bullet (who's about 20 years old) senior feed soaked in warm water, so it's pretty mushy. She drools ALL OVER when she eats, and the dogs LOVE it She pinned her ears at Toni when Toni got too close to her feed pan.
I checked on her when I got home and she appears to be back to her normal ornery self I couldn't be happier!!!
Thank you ALL for your thoughts and prayers!! It means so much to have folks like you to turn to when something is wrong. Paul doesn't understand why I am so attached to Breeze, because to be honest, she is a bitch. But, she's my bitch, and we've been through SOOOO much together. Of course, he talks tough but he sheds just as many tears as I do when one of the animals pass. It must be a guy thing....
Thanks, and I will give BZ hugs from all of you!!!

So glad that she is better. Good eye on you too, lots of people don't catch the early impaction because the horse isn't painful.

Glad that BZ is back to normal. Even a touch of mineral oil with the corn oil might help, too.
Mashing weekely in the cold weather is always helpful & most horses love it. My horse makes the biggest mess I've ever seen with mash. But he really enjoys it. I will even mash 2x a week if the weather is extreme.
I can understand the 'extra' attachment to older horses that you have had for many years. Even more so,one that has been a competition partner. Especially a X-country partner, as the partnership/relationship that you share with that kind of riding is above the norm. I know that the special trust, to take care of each other, competing x-country is something that requires more than the usual horse/rider relationship to be suscessful. I have a partner like that & he is 29 1/2 yrs old. He ownes 1/2 my heart. I can't imaging my life without him.
Give that old feisty girl a hug from me. Her strong will & attitude mad her the competitive partner that she was.

BZ continues to do well. She hasn't shown the sightest hint of discomfort or colic since Monday. I am thinking we are safe for now... She still looks like hell with her mane all twisted up and coat dirty, but at least she's healthy and alive.
And just in time for the Farrier to come tomorrow
Anne, I remember you talking about your older guy being a cross country horse. They are different... kind of like an Equine Malinois. I picked BZ when she was 3 specifically for her attitude.. When my friend trained her to saddle, she knocked him through a fence and broke 3 of his ribs! We've been through hell and back together and there is no horse I would feel safer riding.
She will be 26 on April 10. I think we will be having a party

Glad to hear that she is doing well.
If ulcers come up again, I am somewhat of an expert on nursing horses with severe ulcers...I would be happy to share what I've learned.
Sooooooo glad to hear that she is doing better!!

Thanks, Willie! I may have to take you up on that offer!! I like to be well informed when it comes to the critters in my care.
BZ is still looking fine. The farrier was out today and he said that if I hadn't told him she nearly died he never would have guessed anything was ever wrong with her. She was comfortable even when he picked up her hind feet (if the belly is sore, some horses will refuse to pick up their hind feet because it puts more pressure on the abdomen.)
We are looking at more super cold days (way below 0) in the coming week, and I hope that she will continue to drink enough. That will be the test, I think...

I remember when I was there, for the week, with you all at LB ,Cindy had given me her cell # to give to my barn, when I lost my cell phone, in case of any emrgencies with Blue.
It does takes a horse with big attitude to do the x-country job. My guy was always very choosey about who he would 'allow' on his back. He did not care for most people. He was also a herd leader & just didn't feel he needed to be nice to everyone & he wasn't. LOL He saved my butt many times, thru the years. I only had one friend that could really handle him & he liked her alot & had fun with her. My son he babysat & would do anything to keep him safe while on his back. Funny how they know.
Some of the best times of my life, where on the back of my horse.
Glad that BZ is continuing to do well & hope that she continues to do so. I see a HUGE bunch of carrots with tops in her future. :-) Big hugs to BZ.
