Last trip to Charleston I went for a steak in applebees, waitress asked about my accent - I said that I was from England, she says "oh yeah that's a part of france..."
I was just like, "No."
My mom is from England. She had not been here that long when a nurse asked her where she was from. She replied England and the nurse exclaimed "Your husband must be so proud of you, you speak English very well."
Granted this was the very early 60's and I don't think nursing required a broad liberal arts background but.................
I had a patient ask me one day what part of the south my accent was from....
I was in virginia for a convention and told my (visibly american btw) money wasn't accepted because I was from Canada...after telling the cashier where I was currently living....Massachusetts....
I was unable to form words to respond to that and went to the other cashier who'd fallen down on the floor crying with laughter and was unable to check me out for a full 2 minutes.
strangely enough since then I've run into this problem in Indiana, Pennsylvania, and Ohio...
My grandmother is from England, she came over alone on a boat at the age of 12 to stay with an American family, Kodak did some sort of exchange program to get kids away from the war.
So in high school I went with my family and best friend to england and scotland to meet my great grandmother and the rest of the family that live there.
I found it both odd and funny that we were told multiple times how pretty our accent was....from Oklahoma LOL!!
Having the the last name Lee, many many people automatically ask me if I am Chinese. It is quite obvious by simply looking at my face that I am not the least bit asian
I was babysitting and over heard the conversation of the night. On dog behavior. The conclusion was that dogs tend not to like men because they smell the testosterone and it makes them a bit nervous. And the deeper voices bug them a bit, too.
A little off topic (but hey, I started the topic for laughs!)...
A friend of mine said she was standing in the store yesterday and overheard just a bit of a woman's conversation and swore she said....(drumroll please....)

I did meet a man once when I was out at Ft. Ord years ago....nice looking Asian COWBOY with a TEXAS accent!
When he opened his mouth and started talking it was all I could do to keep from laughing hysterically!
