There is debate on the weatherproofing of short v long GSD's. Namely, that longer haired Shepherd's coats aren't as waterproof.
Does anyone have a definitive answer to this.
Thanks,
Gary..
Yes,
My longhair shepherd has not undercoat, except a very little bit on her hips and thighs. Her coat absorbs water like a sponge, she is much easier to bathe than my proper coated shepherds. Also the coat is harder to maintain (always full of burrs) and does not keep her warm. Despite all that hair she shivers if the temperature drops below about 25 degrees.
Long coats are very poorly weatherproofed. Long stock coats (with undercoat) are probably okay for weatherproofing, but they would be a bear to maintain (thinking of my border collie)
Hope this helps
Elisabeth
My old dog has a long stock coat and he's incredibly waterproof/weatherproof. The outer hair will appear very wet, downright soggy looking, but he'll be bone dry at the skin. And yes, he is a much 'higher maintenance' fellow than the others!

Thanks Elisabeth and Lee for taking the trouble to discuss the subject. (As you can tell I posted it on the wrong subject. Not sure how to post an entirely new topic. Perhaps someone can tell me?)
I welcome anybody else's opinion of GSD coats. My current GSD male has a 'medium' coat. A bit feathery about the ears and thick around the neck. He lives outside all year round but with a decent kennel system for warmth.
Thanks
Gary.
I have a short haired GSD and he is always cold, but finally he developed an undercoat, still cold but he is very very water resistant. I found an old wool vest for him to wear at night, when he gets up he takes it off and goes out to play. His outer coat is like straw. I have a friend with a long haired GSD female and her coat is feathery soft and not waterproof but does have undercoat for warmth. Only dog I have seen that is never cold is my siberian, his fur is actually cold to the touch because all his body heat is kept in. He actually goes swimming in 30 degree weather...he is crazy.
