Hi,
I've had my rescued GSD for about 5 months now. He is properly crate trained, working on lots of obedience, etc. But I recently got complaints from the neighbor that he is still barking a lot when I'm not at home. So I put the tritronics bark limiter on him at level 4 like Cindy suggested. It definitely does do the trick, and from what I can tell, he's figured out to not bark in his crate. However, he has developed some anxiety with the crate now (since that's the only time he ever tries to bark is when he is home alone and crated). My gut tells me I just need to keep going and the stress is something he will just have to work through. But have other people seen this happen? And about how long do you think it usually takes for the dog to settle back down and not be too stressed?
Thanks,
Tina

I don't have any suggestions, but I feel your pain. My GSP, Birdie, moans and screams when she's in the crate and she thinks someone is home but ignoring her (whether or not that is true doesn't matter). Sometimes she gets so hysterical about it it sounds like someone's ripping her ears off or something. We have a joke going about 'Just hurry up and die already!' and 'I can't wait for the funeral.' Birdie is also very soft and shuts down from correction. I've been unable to find a way to make her shut up in the crate without causing her serious stress, drooling, and attempting to break out of her kennel and hurting herself in the process. She only acted like that when I used a very low stim on a dogtra collar, and NEVER acts stressed when she's pitching a fit.

Tina, Is this guy getting enough exercise in the AM before you have to go to work? That might help burn off some of the extra energy and help him settle. Also, have you tried leaving him a frozen kong or similar in the crate? Poor guy!

my dog got really stressed in the crate too, so i just left her in the bedroom and close the door. sometimes i use the citronella bark collar, and sometimes i use a regular collar that i put around her neck to make her think i am putting the spray collar on her and it tends to make her not know when she has the actual bark collar on or the regular one. she still whines and cries, but doesn't bark as much.
sometimes i just think my dog may never overcome being stressed by being alone.

Exactly what Barbara posted; Is this dog getting enough exercise?
JMO, but I think an Un-exercised, Under Exercised dog left in crate, hinges on cruel.
Daily Exercise, Off Leash Preferred, is the Committment, for owning dog, esp large breed dog.

Are you putting the bark collar on right before you leave the house and put him in the crate? If so I wonder if you should try putting the collar on first thing in the morning and leave it on in the evening to help him get used to it (also maybe he wont associate it with being crated). Ive never used a bark collar so I'm not familiar with the protocal but I do use a e-collar goes on first thing in the morning comes off before bed. Just a thought.

Not to hijack but just wanted to say that care should be taken in leaving the ecollar on for extended periods of time as the connectors can cause irritation and wear painful spots on the dog's neck. You are probably keeping an eye on this, but just wanted to clarify for other's who may not be aware. At the very least, if the collar has to remain on all day, it should be adjusted occasionally and the connectors moved to a different spot on the neck. There is also a "faux" ecollar which could be worn less snug on the neck for those times when actually using the collar is not needed.

Definately a good point I rotate sides every couple days and make sure its snug so it does not rub. Tenzin got a hot spot about a year ago when I first got his e-collar it only took that one time for me to monitor his neck very closely. He likes to puff up his neck when I put it on so I usually tighten it a little after he has had it on for a few minutes.

hi,
often using the bark collar only treats the symptoms and not solving the problem. the dog may stop barking but, as u said, can become anxious and start chewing things or urinating around. you must combine regular training with the collar and help your dog create a good association with his crate by making him stay there when his is not wearing the collar and when you are at home.
