My old (12 year old) neutered male had some urine leaking issues. Usually in the morning but sometimes when lying down.
The vet had me wash out his penile sheath with a mild antisepic solution. I don't remember that working super well, but she said male dogs can retain urine in the penile sheath and washing it out can help (sounds weird, maybe Betty can explain this better).
I don't want to scare you, because Jeter is much younger and overall healthier than my old dog was at the time of this issue, but there is sometimes a nuerological incontinence issue. That is, incontinence can be a sign of a brain tumor or nuerological problem... that's what it was in my dog's case. But I figured this out post facto, after he'd suffered a debilitatitng status epilepticus (siezure that wouldn't stop).
If I were to do it again, I'm not sure how I'd deal with the situation. Wouldn't have made any difference to have a diagnosis-except to give me time to prepare, as the prognosis would have been the same. BUT I don't think this is what Jeter has...
With my dog, he had some issues with urine retention as well, and at times wasn't able to produce a stream of urine even when his bladder was super full.
I think it's worth your time and money to go see a specialist. You can refuse expensive tests (make sure to ask what the test will tell you and how this would affect your treatment plan), but a knowledgeable vet will be able to explain things for you. Plan to spend at least $500.
Sorry you're going through this. I know how frustrating it can be. I just ended up using a bunch of old towels, and putting them under his penis where he lay. There are also 'doggie diapers' for male dogs. Look stupid but might be worth it. I hope you can figure this out. Most likely it's something that can be treated, but I do think it's worth investigating.
I don't know the relevance but we had a boxer mix that would soak in his sleep especially and we narrowed it down to red dye in anything he ate. Go fig. No Red Dye, no involuntary peeing.
I'm not clear either? I am looking forward to hearing from the vet. I let Jeter out last night to pee. I stayed out there with him to make sure he didn't have anything left in tank before we came back in. 10 minutes later he left a little puddle on the couch.
I have some specific questions to ask the vet thanks to all my Leerburg friends but guess the general question is "have we done everything we can to get to the bottom of this issue"?
My wife and I want to stop washing blankets, rugs and furniture all the time.
