..this just doesn't add up somehow...and distresses me as an advocate. If there are no teeth (no pun intended) in ownership/dangerous dog mandates idiots will keep corrupting this powerful breed people will keep get critically injured...GRRRRRRR
Pits are problematic, my default setting is to get between them and my kids and dogs. I have to observe the handler closly to if they have there stuff together or are they being dragged. Yes a pack of dogs is bad news but honestly, if you were to see a loose pitty type as compaired to a loose Lab or Collie your reaction is going to be differnt.
I agree Dennis. Personally, I LOVE Pit's. if I happened across a pack of them, or even a single one loose while out with my kids, I would have a different reaction then I would to a loose lab, poodle, etc.
It seems Pit owners fall in to 2 categories. The kind we have on this board, who do everything they can to raise ambassadors for the breed and have under-control dogs, or the total opposite. People who have no clue which end the poop comes out of, can train 'sit'. '
To me, I see more 'average' of every other breed. The Bully's always seem to fall into one extreme or the other, which is terribly sad considering what a powerful breed they are. Today at work I saw one of each. An AWESOME Staffy, who came in off leash in a nice controlled heel. No trouble trimming nails, he stood like a rock. The next was a pit, giant low-set prong collar, no control, lunging, and barking at every dog it saw.

You are, unfortunately, correct...at least these days...
Remember Petey from Little Rascals? Helen Keller's great pit bulldog? Sgt Stubby -much decorated from WWI??
The image is so tarnished now....can we get new people?? sigh
I tend to think of it the way Cesar does. Some breeds are "powerful breeds". Pits, Rotts, GSD's, etc. The breed doesnt matter, but the type of dog does. Certain breeds are more likely to do huge damage in the hands of the wrong people.
Dennis has a point. When was the last time anyone heard of death by a pack of wheaton terriers?
Unfortunately, right now pit bulls have a crappy rep because of the crappy owners. But all sorts of other breeds have similar history. If GSD's didn't have the proven track record of being good working dogs, they might have been banned back when everyone had a GSD in their yard. There have been plenty who have gotten into big trouble.
The most dangerous dog I have ever known was a GSD, and it was all on the owners. Like a lot of pit bulls he was on a chain in a yard with no training, exercise or socialization. He was an ultra frustrated, nervy, and completely scary mess.
