Ryuk is passed out in his crate right now....I LOVE a tired dog
Got my modified "dog cart" radio flyer wagon out of storage today and fixed it up (it needed new straps since someone stole them last fall).
We did a quick refresher course with two loops around the complex. I was using his new multipurpose carting harness which is SOOOO much more comfortable for him. We worked first on making sure he remembered the cart specific commands (different speed control commands since he can't run with the wagon...only trot)
Then decided to try something new. Ryuk is in a LOT better shape than he was last year, and he's also physically mature now (2.5 years old). All winter he's been being worked in the deep snow, getting run hard, skioring for a week with my father, etc. My housemate offered to be a crash test dummy for me. Ryuk has pulled a good amount of weight in the past while bikejoring, skioring, and when we got to borrow a super nice high end dog cart. He's never pulled more than 50lbs in this particular wagon but the there's no reason he couldn't. This is an (ugly) but solid wagon. I've really only used it for grocery shopping in the summer. Well, into the wagon my housemate went....We did one full loop of the complex minus one area where it can get a little steep downhill since my housemate weighs more than he's used to braking in the wagon. He did GREAT. He had a little issue on the grass because he had to stop and the grass was thick. But on command he really pushed into the harness to get moving again. We did get stuck once (damn long grass). Not for lack of effort on his part...he simple didn't weigh enough to get the wagon out of the grass with my housemate in it. The wagon is not the most pull friendly thing in the world on grass (sort of goes into sledge mode...the wheels are 75 years old...) so she got out and he had no issue after that. On the pathways and shorter grass he was great. His tail was wagging 100% of the time...overall a fun time was had by all...
His ground driving was great too...I'm half tempted to perhaps try driving him on my own tommorrow...just around the complex....I think it would be fun >_>
Wow, that’s great Jaimie. It’s so cool watching them put out that effort. They really seem to know what they’re doing. And like Ryuk, my boys seem to really enjoy it too.
I’m looking for a better cart too. If you happen to see anything reasonably priced, I’d love to hear about it.
Good job Ryuk. That grass can be tough. Have fun in the complex, stay safe!!
