"I'm not sure how many of you do this but my wife and I monitor all cars in our neighborhood. We've done this since we moved here about a year ago. It's very very helpful to know who doesn't belong."
That's called "situational awareness" - I want Nick as a neighbor!
"When seconds count, the police are only minutes away"
And it'll take you a few minutes just to get through to a dispatcher in most large cities. I called to report a drunk driver and was dumbstruck by the wait period between me dialing 911 and actually getting through to someone. It was long enough that in a bad situation my phone could have been taken before I even got to yell out my location.
Wish I could conceal carry but it's just not possible with me living on post when I'm in the states. Of course here we're armed 24/7.
No disrespect to PDs but it is physicaly impossible for them to protect everybody at all times without having a police state. Rationaly people assume personal responsibility for their own personal protection and safety. When the criminal that burgals my house goes to court for the crime it is "Ima Burgaler vs THE COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA" not "... vs Dennis Jones" so the cruel reality LEOs are there to protect the STATES interest not yours.

I completely agree with your take on personal responsibility, but I have to point out that, in a criminal case, it would be "The State of Whatever" versus "Alleged Criminal," not the other way around. The State is prosecuting and the accused is the defendant. Sorry, I just can't help myself. I'm a court reporter/legal transcriber and see the case captions all the time.

It only goes to show that even when I'm wrong I'm still right!
