I have wanted a Mal or Dutchie for years, but I know I am not enough trainer/handler for either breed. I do hope they don't go the way of other fad dogs. We have enough breed ban issues already.
I'll just go back home and tell my Border Collie/Kelpie mix that he is my Mini-Mal and be satisfied with that.
Koenig fell into my lap. I was managing a rescue at the time. Not actively looking for a dog, but heck, I saw dogs needing homes every day so it was always a temptation. On my day off, my boss texted me and said she had a '1yr old intact Dutch Shepherd male that tried to eat my face'
I had heard of the breed, and immediately googled DS's to do more research. Spent the rest of the night reading, and took him home 2 days later. I got bit 3 or 4 times before we got out issues sorted out. Now, it's a match ALMOST made in heaven. Love this dog!

I have also wanted one ever since I discovered leerburg and read about them. I have a personal list of requirements I need to meet though before I will get one.
Some of the items included are that I have enough free time to be the only person that ever has to handle the dog as a pup, have a large yard or private training area, have my rescue at least trained well enough to get his CGC and have attended a Michael Ellis class.
Many people say they have experience with dogs, citing all these dogs they have lived with. Most of these people have little or no experience that is transferable to a working dog.

Same with me. I have things I need to do before getting one of these dogs, because I do really want one. And A Day In The Life Of A Malinois is really funny. Sounds like my day, minus the missing shoes. :p
I think these are really great dogs, and I didn't even know there was a dog involved with Bin Laden, let alone a Mal. Everyone on LB that has one talks very highly of them (maybe save for Gambit, poor pup) and I'm up for this challenge, just not right now. :p

I think Gambit is awesome! Would I have bought him? No probably not. That doesn't take anything away from him though!

That's true, I suppose I meant his owners. But who knows, I'm not them! Gambit is a trooper though!
my first Malinois was a 9 month old male import puppy from Holland in 1991. i put him in service at 18 months he was excellent full service dog. Kazan would test me quite often. I retired him at age 11. I handled a Sch2 G Shepherd before him, that i raised from a puppy. 2 totally different dogs I'm now retired. 6 weeks ago a friend offered me a puppy. i took a female she's a hand full(what was i thinking lol) I wouldn't have taken her, but the litter is exceptional. The methods M. Ellis/ LeerBurg offers is working very well. Malinois's are not for everyone, but they can be fun.
