Somehow the geckos get in now; the result of living in an old, poorly sealed house.
I'm not as worried about them being unsupervised... they spend a few hours outside in the mornings sometimes and I haven't had any trouble. They'll probably stay inside in the AC most of the day anyway.
Every time I think about taking a longer vacation where we're not taking the dogs I wish I had a way that they could go in and out at will and I could have someone stop by twice a day to check on them and feed them. It's one thing to ask someone to stop by twice/day and another to ask them to be there at 6am and 10 pm for first and last trips out...
I also don't like the fact that to board them they have to get all of these shots, and they would be stuck in a kennel around a bunch of other dogs. Not to mention a nice boarding facility is $$$$$$! And even the better ones close-by seem to have at least a few bad reviews
I've also heard that the larger doggie doors (we have 2 shepherds) could be entry for a burglar, although the electronic collar mentioned previously would stop that.
Besides, that's how I get my exercise going up and down the steps to let them in and out.

....I may have used the dog door for sneaking in/out when I was in my teens...
(Newfies sleep soundly, as did my parents)
Oh yeah! I would have been 'one' with that concept. As it was, my attempt at sneaking out at night though a bedroom window was a dismal failure (some 30+ years ago )

I once got a message on my cell phone from my mother. " I know your gone. I locked your window, but then I changed my mind. It's unlocked. I am so disappointed in you." :EEEEk!
I never had a problem sneaking out but my loyal, childhood companion (GSDxCollie) put some nice holes in my leg when I tried climbing in a window at 3am.
Never heard a bark or growl from her. She just sat...and waited.
There is a dog door in my woodworking shop for my two GSD. Their dog houses are inside there but they sleep on the covered patio unless it gets down in the teens.
You can install a dog door, and then when you decide it isn't working so well you can slide in the plastic panel that keeps it closed. Then, when the dog decides she really liked having the door she will chew the whole thing up enough to get in.
I considered a dog door in the "screen" door and not the main door, just so it could be used during the day when I'm home and then close the main door when I'm gone and at night. But, with fosters in and out and with trying to manage keeping everyone separated, I thought I might be better off not doing it. I figured it would be one more thing I'd have to keep a close eye on, ya know?
