I am noticing the fur around Jethro's neck is a dirty grey colour where his prong collar sits. I want to try getting him a new collar with smaller prongs and I am wondering if the stainless steel or chrome collars can make a difference with this discolouration. Any suggestions?
I have heard of hair discoloration and/or hair loss, rashes, etc. from prong collars. In fact, I now suspect that the prong collar is what caused a severe hair loss and rash on one of my dogs. Apparently, the nickel content is what is primarily responsible for causing reactions in some dogs.
I see that Herm Sprenger now offers a Curogan Prong Collar that is a copper/tin alloy, with no nickel content. As far as the difference between the chrome and the stainless steel versions, I think they both contain nickel but someone please correct me if that is wrong.
As far as measuring the links, it has always been my understanding that they are measured by length as opposed to width. In other words, lay one link on a table with the prongs sticking up in the air. The lengthwise part that touches the table is what you measure.
The Curogan won't discolor skin/coat. Plus, it looks snazzy!!!! I see that Leerburg only has it in the 3.25mm size though... Jenny, you'll probably want a 2.25mm. That is what I use on Koenig. I don't think the size has to do with the length of the prong- it's the gauge of the prong. 2.25mm width of the metal, not the entire piece.

You're right, Kelly. The measurements are given in millimeters, not centimeters, as I was thinking, so it's got to be the gauge of the metal, not the length of the link. I never have been any good at metric system measurements.
Me either. We sell them at my work though, and I'm the local 'prong fitter' trying to remedy all the big bully breeds with the GINOURMOUS 28'' prong collars hanging down on the chest.... lol. Hate that. I'm just happy I've got my boss convinced to order lots of the 2.25's now, and lots of extra links. It's easier then convincing someone to spend $20.00 on a prong, and then taking out 1/2 the links... lol.
Sorry Jenny, got OT there!! I'll see if I can find a link to a 2.25 Curogan later for you. I don't think stainless is known for the discoloration nearly as much as chrome, but Curgon won't change his coat at all.

I don't know how to tell. I remember when I bought it, but I don't remember what it was. In the meantime I have bought Sprenger chrome quick release prong collars, but I don't like the quick release (because I let it loose accidentally when I was adjusting Jethro's collar) so I reverted to the original prong collar. I think it must be stainless steel because when I compare it to the chrome it seems a little lighter (ie. uncoated, probably the same guage).
I know by the jingle. I guess that is not helpful... LOL!! The SS ones are not quite as shiny as the chrome, IMO. Do you remember how much you spent? The chrome are cheap!
