I don't know the ideal starting age. I think that's a vet or breeder question. I have read four months, after any puppy vax, and I have also read that if it's past six months then you must do the blood test first (which makes complete sense to me). The dosage also changes as the pup grows, of course.
That's what I meant about the problem with off-label use. If it's made for swine or cattle, it doesn't give puppy directions or inappropriate breeds.
That's why the URL I posted on page 1 gave this warning:
Ivermectin is considered safe and effective if you are administering it under a veterinarian's advice and supervision. Ivermectin should not be used in collies or collie mixed breeds because toxic side effects have been reported in this breed. If your dog has tested positive for heartworm, only use Ivermectin under the supervision of your veterinarian. Ivermectin should not be given to puppies under six weeks old. Never give your dog more than the recommended dosage of Ivermectin. If your dog shows symptoms such as stumbling, tremors, weakness or disorientation after a dose of ivermectin, call your veterinarian right away. These are symptoms of a possible overdose.
I think they meant that if we don't know the instructions for the animal we are giving it to via off-label use, then we should get vet info first.
I completely understand the cost issue. I do think that before we start off-label use, we should consult with the vet. It may sound counter-productive, but it seems like important info that will last us a lifetime can be gleaned in one discussion, and that we could otherwise make a deadly mistake.
If you're in MI I think I'd start giving sooner rather than later - lots of mosquitoes out there.
I'd look for a local vet for some guidance. Look for a farm vet as they're likely to be more comfortable/willing in helping you with off lable usage for ivermectin.
