Got a 7 mos old male mal pup out of a combination of a selectif and nvbk breeding. The first litter was superb. Most if not all were highly driven serious dogs. I did not personally documented and witnessed the upbringing of that litter but because it produced well, we decided to repeat it. Now this 7mos old male pup I have is manifesting serious avoidance to loud sounds. When it was about 3-4mos old it never showed any problem to anything. Now, it stops at any sound of a gunfire or a very loud sound. Is this a normal stage that some dogs undergo to. If so, what is the best thing to do while the pup is at this fear stage?
I love the competition Sport Protection provides me.
I'd be making 'happy dog' sounds (like I make when it's time to go for a walk, or get a treat) when I hear them and the dog reacts. And a treat does always help!
Also, desensatising helps. Dropping pots in the kitchen with praise and treats. Have to watch the proximity of dog and sound if the dog is very fearful, only getting the dog closer to the noise as it gets more comfortable.
Here's info on stages pups go thru their first year so you can compare:
I don't believe nerve issues magically appear because of a "fear stage". It is a bunch of bunk.
Holes in a dog's nerve will often manifest during these periods, but they are there to begin with IMO. These periods will only highlight existing problems as thresholds are a little lower during points in a dog's development.
Get to work dealing with the issue ASAP, don't chalk it up to a "fear stage" and ignore it.
I'd consider this a strike against the dog and the littermates when considering them for a later breeding program.
