Hi, I'm trying to understand my GSD's behaviour in certain situations. He's about 17 months old and I haven't really had any problems with him other than stubborness and his constant want to play.
I'm trying to understand the following behaviour. Yesterday while shovelling the drive way he started going a little nutty. High pitch barking and lunging at the shovel when it backed off from him and jumping back when it comes forward. He does the same thing with the vacuum cleaner, anything that is loud/strange/moves he does this.
With the vacuum if it stands still or backs away from him he'll try grab it and shake it and whine lots. It's strange because he seems scared but he doesn't growl, just barks high pitch, backs off, lunges back in, backs off over and over.
Is this fear? Should I be correcting him for this? Or just ignore?
Silly, silly, silly...
Your dog's playing with you. You should correct yourself, not the dog. Unless you find this funny.
My dog would be in Heaven if I allowed him to turn these chores into a game, but I don't appreciate it much. That's what the 'down/stay' is for. No, it isn't fear.
are her hackles raised? its probably play/prey if they arent, i always let them around a vaccum while its off after i run it for awhile, so they understand that its nothing to be afraid of, i would guess your dog is just playing with you also.
You guys are right, i think he's just playing as his hackles aren't usually raised (if ever). It's just annoying sometimes since I can't broom, vacuum, shovel etc without him going crazy
I just found it interesting how when the object moves towards him he backs away, when it pulls away he lunges after it.
And yes I did make the mistake of leaving the vacuum out when I wasn't around once. Needless to say that vacuum is now out of service... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif" alt="" />
I agree it prey/play my 18 month old Female GSD does the same thing since 3 months old, with the Vaccuum and Weed Whacker, I can make her stay away, with a command but here she comes again after a minute or 2. It incites gher when the plastic cords hitting her muzzle? She is trying to play until I cut it off and she stops. I don't allow her to be left alone with these items because she will tear them up playing, chewed a spark wire off my lawn mower once.
My Male is totally different could care less about the noise r the lawn equipment. He gets excited when I open the gate to put up the lawn eq, he thinks we are going for a ride. Sometimes yes, ST no. He ain't running nothing.
