I avoid dog parks like the plague. Actually I avoid other dogs that way too. If the other dog is smaller my guy is automatically the villian even when the smaller dog is flashing gang sign at Jager.
My bride, my bride's dog, and I are our pack and we don't need doggie friends. For foolish people who live their lives using their dogs like the Sims I'm happy that they have so much joy, and sad that they are that pathetic.
You are right to worry about other dogs, consider the potential for behavioral problems and disease that you can get from other dogs and the price is just too high for the small reward potential. If my dogs need friends that bad they can start a facebook page or get one of those prison pen pals.
Mine have their own 'pack' that is enough for them. They DON'T NEED doggy friends.
When was the last time anyone saw a wolf pack play nice with the pack nextdoor. They don't....they'd KILL them.
They are canines that interact with their packmates (human & canine) & that's the social aspect of their lives.
All they really need, to keep them happy & content, is to know their place within the structure of their pack, food & a safe place to lay their heads down to sleep. Pretty simple, if you ask me.
We, as humans, can learn alot from them if we payed attention.
I will NEVER understand why people think that my dogs should want to be firiendly with them or play with their dogs. It's silly & it goes against the nature of dogs to play with strangers...human or dogs.
Also by directing the play you reenforce the concept that everything they need is provided by Alpha. Personally it's a more powerful tool than most people believe. Not only do you dispense food but fun and you give them more chances to please you and your GSD lives to please you.

Heck, remember when your kids started school? Remember all the bad habits and ideas they learned from their new little friends why would you want to go through that extra times with your dogs?

Well, now that jethro is starting to settle down I am starting to contemplate adopting a third dog, a younger pack mate for jethro to play with... I always wanted to get a third dog, I would love to find one that would really wear him out, the way his friends nootka (greyhound husky cross) or lindy (chocolate lab) do. I'm not sure if it is a good idea or not.
