I just received a note from the Board of Animal Health regarding a cat in Morrison county MN which was attacking it's own kittens-- and found to be rabid.
With the discussion regarding the pointlessness of rabies vaccination on the board I just wanted to emphasize that in some places this disease exists and is a real threat. In the case described above the owners saw a skunk in their yard a few weeks prior to their mother cat becoming ill.
People could google "Board of ANimal Health" in their state and see for themselves what their risk might be.
I am a strong believer in rabies shots however I don't agree with the yearly boosters. I had to call a retired vet to get a 3 yr rabies cerificate on my dogs because all the other vets require yearly boosters. Check-ups, yes, yearly boosters no!
