Just wanted to share a couple of products that I have found to be helpful with dogs that are serious chewers (sp?)....
My male should have been named Destructo due to his love of chewing up anything, one of his favorites being wood, unfortunately the wood being part of the outside of the garage which shares a wall with his kennel.
I tried bitter apple and hotpeppers crushed in vinegar, but it seems after awhile he would chew the taste off the objects. Maybe I should have applied it more, but I put it on fairly regularly.
I recently bought this stuff called Phooey from the petstore, and it seems to have helped. I put a bit on my own tongue just to see and holy smokes is it awful!!! I tried eating cheese and drinking multiple fluids which did not help get the taste out of my taste buds... I just had to wait until the taste went away. I put some on a cotton ball and stuck in my dogs mouth, which he didnt react to all that much, but I noted less chewing where I have sprayed the product. It doesnt smell really either, which is a positive over the homemade vinegar pepperspray I had made.
Another product that might be helpful for the incredible chewing dog is the Orvis ToughChew Dog Nest... its pricey, but Orvis will replace it if your dog chews a hole in it and if they chew a hole in the new one, they will give your money back. With that said, my male seems to have chewed every pillow we have gotten, even ones we thought were tough, but he has only managed to put a small hole in this one. When I noted the hole in it I sprayed the Phooey on it and I have not seen anymore chewed spots on the dognest. I will be returning it to Orvis to get one without a hole, but I will probably make a habit of Phooeying it from time to time.
