Hi.
My dog will be two in May. He still occasionally chews what he's not supposed to.
I tried the bitter apple-soaked cotton balls a few days ago. He didn't seem to mind that I put those in his mouth. He wagged his tail the whole time I held his mouth shut.
Today, my husband caught him licking an item that had been sprayed with bitter apple.
Did I just give him a "taste" for the stuff? Any other ideas?
I put a post up on a couple of products a couple of weeks ago regarding a anti chewing spray called Phooey from petco... My male didnt seem to mind bitter apple too much either, so I soaked some hot peppers in vinegar. After a few run in's with it my male seemed to enjoy it to an extent. The latest product I have tried is called Phooey... it is horrible tasting, but really has no smell. Since using it, I have noticed a good deal less chewing on our home. I tried the stuff myself and could not get it off my tongue for at least 30 minutes. It is nasty tasting.
Unless he is a crazy Mal like mine. I think he chews in his sleep. I call it sleep chewing. So some tired dogs do chew. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />
I had an English Pointer that enjoyed bitter apple and I have had clients occasionally tell me it has no effect. I personally hate the stuff, one shot was enough for me
If it is a particular item that you do not want to be chewed on I have a trick that might help. I had a dog that would look out the window and see a cat or something and start chewing on the window sil. Got a jalapeno or scotch bonnet out of the fridge, cut it in half and rubbed it all over the sil. Problem solved. BTW, it is the inner membrane that lines the hollow inside of the pepper that is nice an hot. I find this works on wood furniture that you do not want to get chewed up. Make sure it will not ruin the finish first.
