connie have you heard much about spirulina supplement for dogs? Looking into that right now. Didn't see any of this product on the health page here at leerburg. sharon
Just thought I would pass this info along in case someone else is where I am. My vet does not recommend iron supplements for Terra. Here is why:
With immune mediated hemolytic anemia (also with Evan's syndrome) that we are tentatively treating, iron levels are not a concern-the cells are rupturing prematurely and releasing their contents (i.e., pigment, hemoglobin, iron, etc) into the body again--that all gets re-absorbed and recycled.
In contrast, if you lose blood 'externally' e.g. GI bleed, flea bite anemia, the contents of the blood cell aren't recovered. Over time you would become iron-deficient if it went on long enough (you have iron stores that would be used for awhile to make up for the deficiency, but eventually you would deplete the endogenous iron stores).
If we supplement Terra with more iron, iron stores maybe come too high and actually cause a toxicosis.
Iron supplement in humans is many times justified, but dogs are different with regards to anemia. So, I would not recommend the supplement.
So I hope this helps someone.
Today Terra is eating well and drinking and taking her meds well. She went outside and tried to chase lizards, but of course I stopped her. I am remembering she had the transfusion yesterday so she is a bit up. Right now she is resting with us while the other dogs take their naps.
