You are right John, generally speaking they DO get the best of care, but having spent too many years on an oncology ward, where the best the dying gets is a curtain drawn round, the ones with family or freinds holding their hands and talking to them are the ones who pass more peacefully, they don't seem so scared, and an animal as basic and trusting as a dog just deserves the people around them that they know and can feel at peace with and rely on, that said, I am a self confessed coward when it comes to animals, I can't even kill a spider, so I am not the most sensible and level headed or logical when it comes to animals lol!
There is nothing useful I can add, I just want to wish Jamie and your whole family peace with the difficult but needed decision you all had to make.
I know you know it was the right thing to do, but that does not make it any easier. Harry is no longer suffering and that is the only good thing to come out of this. I am sorry for the pain you all are enduring, you are in my heart and prayers.
Let your son know that his dreams are the dog's way of letting him know that he (the dog) is happy and free of pain now. if you believe, as I do, that dogs do go to heaven, let him know that his dog will be meeting him at the bridge one day.
You can make a memory book or box with your son. Include pictures, drawings, stories about the dog, perhaps the dog's collar. and favorite toy/s. You could also donate to your local animal shelter in the dog's name.
