Correctly using defensive training in protection is 100% different than the handler creating defensive/avoidance behaviors in obedience to motivate the dog. Why you may ask?
What is one of the most important rules of working a dog in defense during bite training? YOU CANNOT WORK YOUR OWN DOG IN DEFENSE. What kind of message are you sending your dog?
I don't think people are so slow as to not understand what type of training you are doing now that it has been explained, I think most people are asking why that type of work is necessary and if it will produce the kind of results that they want to see, WITHOUT creating conflict and fear between the dog and handler.
I have to say that I disagree with these types of methods. Aversive conditioning has it's place in training obedience, but really pushing your dog into avoidance, or "survival behaviors" is not the best way to train. I am not a fan of escape training as the primary method used in obedience and that is what you are describing.

Steve C Why your last post??? And can you share your kennel name, or if no kennel, then at the very least the name of the dogs you will be handling at the Nationals?? I know folks would love to meet up with you. Is it just me, or is it frustrating to others when they want more info on those who hide their real names and kennel names??
Alright. Enough said. If Steve C. is as good as he says he is then God bless him...more power to him. I like what VanCamp and Mike said on this. To little old less- experienced me, it sounds right. Steve's methods sound very old school. I agree that better methods have developed. Since Steve C. says this is his last post, I see no point in continuing this. Bangzoom!
