i was in a competition yesterday. dog was warming up really nicely. i couldn't have asked for better.
and right before it was our turn, i started to worry about it. and i worry that i'll do something wrong (like trip over the dog and fall on my face. or tell him to stay when i was supposed to heel).
my dog is ultra perceptive and very cued-in to me. he notices the slightest physical and emotional changes.
when i get nervous, he gets silly. he thinks he needs to play with me to make me feel better.
so he put in a really horrible performance. right before we started, it was as if he had forgotten everything. he wouldn't sit. he wouldn't heel.
now i'm not saying that it's ok for him to not heel just because i'm nervous. but i also feel that if i'm hindering his ability to perform, then i'm the one that needs to be fixed.
any ideas on how to get over the show nerves?

My dog is handler challenged too! If he didn't have to deal with me he would be golden.
This is common. Think relaxing thoughts. Have a drink. Remember everyone else that is there, including the judge was once upon a time in the EXACT same place you are in now. It is all in how you think.
If you are into alternative therapies I hear that "rescue remedy" can be good for this type of thing. I have never used it on myself, but others swear by it. You can find it at your local granola outlet.... opps, I mean Health Food Store
