Ok, I'll use the search engine for more info on the side effects of NSAIDS. I can call the vet and request blood work. It's unsettling that it can be that serious and he didn't mention it.
I'm kind of hoping that with some weight loss and the added supplements that, at least for now, I wont need to use them regularly.
Vit E, got it.
THat's a lot of great info. Thank you so much!
Some of the potential side effects are serious indeed, but most dogs, of course, do not have them.
It bothers me (along with many people!) that they are often not discussed by the vet when the NSAID is prescribed. Maybe a hand-out comes with the med.
Here is an overview from Doctors Foster & Smith:

Provide a complete medical history about your dog to your veterinarian, including any other medications or any supplements your pet may be taking.
Follow your veterinarian's advice regarding the need for laboratory testing prior to and during therapy.
Do not use with aspirin, other NSAIDs or corticosteroids, or the risk of stomach ulcers is greatly increased.
Follow the prescribed dosage schedule.
Give the medication with food, if possible.
Provide fresh, clean water at all times and monitor water intake. Dehydration greatly increases the risk of side effects. If you observe any side effects, contact your veterinarian.
(They list the side effects to the right of these instructions.)
I was somewhat surprised, because he is a difficult dog to keep trim. I still wonder if his build contributes to his overall look of being chunky. He's a funny looking dog...cute but his body is not in proportion. But this is just my opinion. I'm going to do my best to get his weight down. I love both my dogs very much, but Ollie is my heart dog. I'll do anything to keep him comfortable and around for a long time.
Connie, I really appreciate the time and effort you've put into giving me good info and advice. It still blows my mind how you and others here are so helpful just out of kindness and concern for the dogs. There's so much that I'd have never known or thought to question without this forum.
