My 19 yr old nephew moved out to Phoenix this summer and is ready to get his first dog. He has a steady job, lives in a house with a yard and pool. He is looking for a dog that is close to or older than 1 yr old. He knows that he is not ready to start out with a puppy. He likes to exercise and wants a dog that can go with him. Does anyone in the area have recommendations on where he should look?
He was leaning toward pit bulls but his roomate said that was the only breed he did not want. He wants a short coated, energetic dog. He is looking for a medium sized dog that he can jog with or take to the lake for a swim. His only experience with dogs has been our heelers and his mom had a jack russell which was a terror.
Check out the local shelters different breed rescues(depending on what one he decides on) & see if they have any young dogs around a year or so & see what breeds they might be & go from there. He may hit the jackpot with one of them.
This lady has the bully look without the bully breeding and would probably be my choice for an active, new dog home. What an adorable face http://www.azhumane.org/dogs.shtml She is at Arizona Humane Society. Good luck to your nephew on his search!
Since it sounds like your nephew is looking for a nice companion dog and isn't committed to any particular breed(s), I hope he will consider saving a life by adopting a dog from one of the shelters in the Phoenix area, or if he does decide on a purebred, to go to a breed rescue.
I wish him good luck. If you can stand the heat in the summer, there are a lot of recreational opportunities in the area he will be living, lots of things for an active owner to do with a dog.
He got a 3 yr old black lab mix female, spayed, and housebroken. He got her from a local pound where she has been for the last 4 1/2 months. He is so excited, just does not know what to do. I am offering pointers but mostly told him to get on Leerburg and read and not be afraid to ask questions. Right now she is sticking to him like glue. I think a good obedience class would be good for them as he has never had a dog. If anyone could recommend a trainer in the North Phoenix area I would like to give him some class time for Christmas.
