Good point Nancy. I've never heard this differentiation Bob. What part of the country uses it? I've always used HR to describe a dog that finds any part of a deceased human or the intact body. It seems that such a dog that found only one or the other would have very limited use but a dog that could find both would get a lot more work.
Lou Castle has been kicked off this board. He is an OLD SCHOOL DOG TRAINER with little to offer.
We've always used the term cadaver and HRD interchangably. HRD, as it was explained to me, is more polically correct. I've never heard that explanation before either.

Any behavior that is reinforced is more likely to occur again.
In my experience HRD & cadaver are often used interchangeably. I prefer HRD b/c I think it's more accurate and descriptive of what a single purpose dog does.
In VA, our air scent dogs our required to indicate on a cadaver, since, unfortunately that's what we end up finding in many lost person cases. I don't think its reasonable to expect an air-scent dog to locate old/scattered/fragmented/forensic evidence remains in the same manner as a single purpose HRD dog. I think that HRD is sufficiently complex and important to warrant singularity.
Personally, I believe that Explosives, Human Remains and Arson Detection dogs should be single purpose. Training an air-scent dog to indicate on cadaver, within the context of a missing persons search, is a necessity. Deploying the same dog in a Mass Fatality incident, forensic evidence or scattered remains search, without divulging the serious limitations of such a dog in these scenarios, would be unethical.
I think it all depends on where you learn your lingo.
Indication to me is: When a dog shows a natural interest.
Alert to me is: A trained responce.
Airscent/Tracking to me is: A technique to find something.
Cadaver/Live is: What I'm looking for.
I've heard the same description as Bob on Cadaver/HDR.
I usually say that my dog is more of a forensic detective, because she looks for a lot of trace evidence.
Isn't it funny how where you are from can change the meaning of a word.
