I have a pile of river sand 6' x 8' x 1' for all my dogs. They go and lay around in it and roll in it and play in it . That cleans their bodies. But it cannot be beach sand which is salty. It has to be river sand.
My pups too take sand bath once or twice a day and they stay clean themselves.
In hawaii, its pretty much all beach sand..hehe its ok though. I asked a friend why they think a puppy shouldnt be bathed and her only conclusion was "maybe because if its not with the right shampoo it could affect them?"...
Clarify by spelling every little thing out. Some people can be extreme when drawing their own conclusions.
I have a 4yr lab, that I had to bathe often after I got her as a 8 week old puppy as she seemed to always have a nack for getting dirty. I know her first bath was before 12 weeks and it hasn't tramatized her a bit. In fact, I have to spell B-A-T-H around here or lock the door when I take mine or she'll race you for the tub. I've also just used regular pet shampoo with no probelms.
Over 'bathing' can cause the skin oils to dry up & cause dry skin & itching etc & over dry hair which can cause 'coat' issues.(brittle & breaking hair, coat loss ect)
Only use good quality dog shampoo, as it is balanced to a dog's ph levels (not human)
Also, you can just rinse off the dog rather then actually 'bath' the dog & only 'wash' a really dirty area only.

That is true regardless of age.
Always use shampoo for dogs (people shampoo being the wrong pH).

Yup, rinsing is great for getting rid of sand, and also pollen and other potential allergens.
If the dog doesn't smell, isn't oily, you don't have allergy issues (pollen) a good, deep brushing 3-4 times a week is all most dogs need.
I think people get crazy with all the dog bathing.
