Hi guys. I had to take Kasey to the vet Saturday because he kept licking his penis area a lot and you could see puss and a tad of blood coming from there. My regular vet is on vacation, so we had to see one of the others. I don't like him as much - he's nice, but just doesn't seem as confident. Anyway, he wanted to do a urinalysis to make sure there isn't a UTI. After examining things, which didn't look too comfortable for Kase, the vet was pretty sure it was an infection on the inside of the sheath.
He took him in the back and collected urine with a needle, using an ultrasound, and said they got right in the bladder easily the first time. He didn't want to have him pee in a cup or use a cathetor because he didn't want the urine to get contaminated from the discharge.
Now there is a lot of bright purplish-red bruising all around the base of his penis on one side. I called today and asked if that was normal and they put the vet right on and he seemed like he was a little nervous. He explained what they had done, and that they used ultrasound, and didn't have any trouble getting the sample, etc. He said the bruising isn't the normal, but that it occassionally happens.
Just so I know, in case he ever needs a urine sample this way again, IS it normal to have all this bruising? or did he get brutalized and I didn't know it! I feel really bad for him cause it looks like that must have been painful to create bruising like this. I was going to post a picture, but I'm so lame at the picture thing I didn't want to take the time to do it!!
It sounds as though a vessel was hit and he had some bleeding under the skin. It is likely not a big deal.
You might peek at the whites of his eyes, also the gums, to look for small red spots, hemmhorages, which might suggest some generalized bleeding issue. Not likely, but it wouldn't hurt to check.
