I was wondering what most would consider a good obedience foundation would be for an 11 month old pup.I have an 11 month old rottweiler and was wondering if i am where I need to be or if I'm taking it too far for his age.
I don't think there is a norm. How far you can get is only limited by the dog's motivation and your ability as a trainer. I've seen 4 mos. pups that could do tons more than most 1 yr. olds, just cuz they had talented owners. Are you looking for what is reasonable to expect for attention span or specific behaviors?
My pup will sit, platz, fast recall, clean front, knows heel postion and will heel several steps with great attention. He has nice focus work and is extremely happy doing it.He has never had any type of correction other than me saying "NO".
The people in my local schutzhund club says that it is too much obedience for his age and will probably lower his prey drive.I just wanted to get some more opinions. THANKS!
I consider that perfectly normal for an 11 mos. old. It's only too much if it had been done with compulsion at his age. Prey is not squelched by motivational obedience; it can be/is developed by activities that specifically target that behavior and enhance it, so prey work should be as much a part of your daily routine with your dog as sitting and heeling. If you do a lot of focus work on a youngster, you want to be sure you balance it with time spent away from you, being independent. You don't want the dog looking to the handler when the time comes for agitation work, so you also have to promote independence and self-assurance. If the dog has learned to tune out all outside stimuli and focus intensely on the handler in order to earn his rewards, the agitation work can be confusing to him, so be sure he readily interacts and plays with other people as well.
