I usually have my dogs wear e-collars, although I rarely use them. My dogs are running quite hard these days, because I am skiing (when I'm skijoring, I usually don't use an e-collar, or carry one if I plan to let the dogs free run later in the ski). I have a specific tightness I use and I actually count the notches when I put the collars on- not super tight, not loose. If I was using the e-collar more for specific training, it would be one or two notches tighter to guarentee good contact every single time. As it is, if I have to use it, it is usually just a vibrate reminder (thanks to a forum member- you know who you are).
I don't notice any discomfort or difficulty breathing after an hour or more of hard running, but I am curious if the relatively tight e-collar could cause issues when on for extended periods of hard exercise. By hard I mean running at from 4 minute to 6 minute per mile pace for up to 2 hours or from 4 minute to 12 minute per mile pace for up to 5 hours.
never had problems with that. as long as the collar not pressing to hard on the neck or on the trachea.
just one fact to be consider: after intensive effort a dog neck tend to be slightly thicker so tight become tighter.
but like you said you adjust it not to tight from the begining so iguess its ok.
