Just as Vigo was coming off leash restrictions after his neuter, he got a little slice in his pad. It is on his right front paw, the large pad (not one on the digits), right at the very top. It is just the tiniest slice/crack/wound. You honestly have to really, really LOOK to see it.
Well...this happened on Monday and it has been bleeding periodically on and off. Nothing major, but enough to make a mess out of my kitchen floor with little "sponge painted" blood marks.
I have been keeping the wound clean and using Vetericyn spray to fend off infection. I added a skin ointment (think waxy paste) to hopefully soften up the area. It is just in such a bad spot that every rowdy move he makes can potentially open it back up.
Oh my Melissa, welcome to my world. Vince's pad slice almost removed the large pad. Deep gouge, almost right down the center and about another inch slice right where the pad joins the fur/flesh. We're lucky the ends were secure, it held nicely.
We did gauze bandage dressings twice a day. Neosporin and Golden Seal with a spray of Vetericyn (so happy Joyce said to pick some of that up) and he wore a bootie over it when he went outside.
We were wrapping quite loosely, so yes, the gauze did come off once in a while and not only my kitchen floor, which was a simple wipe but my carpets were full of blood over the Christmas holidays. Just kind of added to the red and green theme. I've got most of it out now. I'm so there with you.
Vince bled easily for about five days and then we started to notice significant improvement, but the deep gouge on the side, for some reason, got just a small amount of infection. It was very deep though and bled and bled.
There's still a slice scar on the pad. It's a bit separated but almost completely healed.
It sounds like you're doing everything right, just really watch for infection.
CJ - That sounds perfectly horrific! I think these pad wounds must bleed more than a head wound. I have similarly decorated carpet...gives me all the more reason to rip it out sooner, rather than later.
Tomorrow will be 4 days. Think I will grab a bootie so he can at least get a little exercise over the weekend.
I am just truly amazed at how much it had bled and wondered what I was doing wrong.
