I'm not very good with stupid, either. People will get an earful from me if I feel it'll do any good. Thankfully I don't really have any bad stories about pet stores, since I go when no one's there. I've had a few people want their dogs to meet mine, but they've always been understanding when I tell them no. It's too easy to say 'no, we're doing training.'
I also don't have a problem grabbing children and steering them away from my dogs. Most parents are thankful and apologized for their child's behavior. Only a few have given me dirty looks but when I say 'my dog is afraid of children and we're doing training to fix that' they seem to understand and pull their kids away. It doesn't matter if it's true, only that it works well.
I have a black lab, of course everyone assumes he's friendly - well he's not. He has been described by Michael Ellis as a Malinois stuck in a Lab's body. We have had several close encounters of people diving face first into his, and when I pull back and say, 'he's not friendly!', I get rude comments and stares of why I shouldn't allow a non-friendly in public.
Well I finally found a fix. I have a patrol harness he wears whenever we are out. 3 patches - they say. DO NOT PET - NOT FRIENDLY - I BITE. People will still ask to pet Enzo, I say he's not friendly, when they say, oh, but dogs like me, I say HE BITES. Ever since he began wearing his harness, no one comes near us anymore :-) And I've actually had people ask me if those signs were all true! oh, boy..!
First was a man running up behind me with a labX on a flexi (imagine that!). I moved way AWAY from him and what did he do....FOLLOWED ME!!!! He says to the dog go say hi...I said NO he's not friendly and the guy let the dog come within 6 feet like that was ok. WTF?
Next was the lady with pyscho-beagle...I was walking down the side walk and saw her coming with her beagle baying lunging against a harness. So I had to cross the 4 lanes of traffic to get far enough away. I waited to cross safely but the she kept coming didn't even wait for us to cross WTF!??? Finally I went between a van and a car. I heard her shouting at the dog and hitting it really hard to stop. She saw me cross back over and maybe next time she'll get the hint to move and not me. Why should I cross the street??? I mean really?
Too much stupid for one day.
A tired dog is a good dog, a trained dog is a better dog.
