We have a 3yr old mixed rescue dog(and a GSD) He has fear aggression issues toward people that we have worked with(crated when we have visitors that stress him,we dont allow strangers to pet our dogs,we try and keep him feeling safe, use pack structure properly, have done some obedience on leash, sit down, come, try and boost his self esteem with climbing obstacles etc) but a few weeks ago we boarded him at new kennel ,he came home and is now fearful of leash, hand shy .I feel so much of our work was backstepped. He was doing better until tonight. While in our family members fenced back yard he saw Beagle let outside next door,I had GSD,Edward was loose,he ran under fence and began to fight, not a full bite type but barking and nipping,my husband hopped fence,Edward came on recall(basically an aus).It was over but I feel very shocked by this and am at a loss of what to do.He ran right to his crate when brought inside.Later when we brought him outside on leash,we use a prong,he was growling alot when he looked toward neighbors,We obviously need to do more work,I am guessing from what I have read ,clicker training?
Sorry for lengthy post.I welcome feedback, and will not be offended.

Pretty dangerous Elizabeth, he's willing to leave you, go accross two yards, and attack another dog. Have you ever taught a leave it command?

I'm not fully getting the connection between fearful of leash and hand-shy, and the escape to attack a neighbor dog.
Are you saying that he has new leash, hand, AND dog-aggro issues? And he left a yard and went under a fence to attack? The recall worked, but only when your husband got close up?
When you say "family member's back yard," do you mean this Beagles is next-door to a place you are visiting, or to your home?
You had your dog unleashed in a non-secure area, right? The fence seemed secure until he went under? (Not an accusation -- a question.)
The prong when you took him out later .... why? I'm just asking. He was leashed, right? Does he pull you so uncontrollably that you feared another escape under the fence, even while leashed? Or do you mean you were off the property?
What has been the dog's attitude towards strange dogs before this kenneling? You mentioned fear aggression toward people .... meaning exactly what? Bark, growl, what? And what people? Strangers in the home, people on the sidewalk?
Has he ever bitten anyone?
How long was he boarded? Is this something that will happen again (even if at a different place), or was this a one-off, or what?
Did he injure the Beagle?
Shock is not a productive feeling, if you can get past that. Stand tall, be calm, keep the overwhelmed feelings out of the dealings with the dog.
Give us more details.

I have left most of his training up to my husband but he does know leave it,I think we were so shocked we did not respond properly I was dealing with my GSD (I put her in a sit, right next to me as she was starting to react to Edward)
He went under one fence, still dangerous as you said.

Why was he off leash? This is a question, rather than an attack.
With the issues you already knew, he was off-leash. Or am I misunderstanding?

Well, I'd would start being pre-emptive with that leave it. I'd go out of the house with the expectation he's going to do the exact same thing any chance he gets, and I would never be unprepared. He's never off leash.
Condition him a little bit with that leave it command. The minute you walk out the door, whatever he looks at, make him leave it and pay attention to you until you release him. Release doesnt mean off leash, just that he has your permission to sniff, pee, whatever.

Connie, the fear of leash hand shy dog aggro is new since he was boarded 4 weeks ago for 5 nights. We usually had freind come to house when we needed to but we were moving and could not do that.
We are visiting family member in DE ,Beagle is next door,we had him off leash in unsecured fenced area.Have been here many times before,no previous issue ever, with the Beagle ,fence.
He does not pull uncontrolably ,we just routinely use prong collars ,guess from me using it with GSD,I dont like chokers and his flat color is not something I would trust if he did decide to pull, its for his tags.
We got him from rescue ,he was very fearful, backing away, avoid eye contact ,no growling ,when men,and others approached him quickly,as I said we really tried to avoid these situations while we worked on his fear.took our time ,kept him crated ,followed alot of Mr Leerburgs ,intro to new dog guidelines. He was doing much better for last 2 yrs.Since kenneling ,one new person, women,he has growled as she was walking into our yard(uninvited ,we had to tell her to not touch ,him, and leave him alone(very difficult for people to grasp that)
I can not answer if it is a one time issue,I can say I will not have him off lead in a area I cannot assure is secure.
Beagle is fine,I dont think he touched him,no signs of actual contact.
Deep breaths, calmer state of mind in place.

He was off leash,we have visited her many times before with no issues of next door neighbors dog provoking this reaction.
I will keep him on a leash ,I fully agree .

Just FYI,we moved from a fenced yard where I never just let them out without supervision to a home on an acre with no fencing so they have been on long lines when I take them out.Our new neighbor has many dogs and a fenced area ,they have a Rottie that barks very aggressively when he is let out and we happen to be outside at the same time,I just bring my guys in as I see no reason to have my dogs react to them(if I stayed out with them barking running fence line my dogs to alert ,Jade know out well and really ignores them ,Edward has had hackles go up and barked at them(that is why I bring them in).
