Thank you for giving this poor dog some thought and dignity at the tragic end of its life, I am a firm believer in kismet, what goes around comes around, and hopefully these odious people will have a similar lonely and frightened end to their worthless existence.

I remember seeing a dog bumped by a car a few years ago - I stopped and caught it. The driver stopped and I told him to go report it (law here), that I'd deal with the dog.
T'was a very skinny yellow lab with a very nasty, very old injury to his leg. You know that smell... or I hope you don't. He had a tag on so I rang the owners to say that he was hurt (only minor new injuries) and that I'd just drive him home, so they could get him to the vet. I assumed that he had been straying for some time because he was emaciated, wounded and filthy - that his owners would be overjoyed to see him and take him to the vet.
Got to this immaculately kept house, leashed the dog and took him to the door. This indifferent woman answered with, "thanks, he got out this morning."
Alarm bells are ringing in my head and I persuaded her to let me in. Turned out they were keeping him in a closet in the hall. There was faeces, blood etc. up to about 4/5 feet on the walls and the dog was cowering.
I said, "Oh, I was maybe looking for another dog. Could I have him?" Long story short, I ended up paying the equivilant of about $80 for him. Incidentally a few days earlier a woman I knew who had lost her lab had told me that she was looking for another one. She agreed to take him sight unseen and met me at the vet. He needed the leg amputated but made a full recovery and is in a great home.
That was an incredibly brilliant and amazing thing you did there Tanith, and to think us Brits are supposed to be 'a nation of dog lovers'....
One of the people who Kaiser went to before I nagged the bejesus out of Jan to let us take him, sent him back because he drooled on her friend's skirt there are some truly absurd people out there.
Lets hope that idiotic woman has some karmic payback somewhere down her shallow road.
Thank you for doing that fantastic kindness, and to your friend, who took a neglected and miserable dog and gave him a loving and caring forever home, giving unconditional love, and saving him, in every sense of the word.
