hmmm..another thought, but don't male dogs sometimes get that frothing after they've smelled urine, particulary a female dogs urine???
but then again...i guess that would only last a few minutes, and from what your describing it was a longer time frame
I have a long coated GSD that will foam like this when he is hot.
He has always been like this, so I see this as a normal thing for him. I carry a cold water bottle with me on walks, especially when it starts to get hot. That helps a lot. I live in Texas and when it starts to heat up here, the water helps a lot.
If it was a hot day, it might just be that.
I was wondering about your dog feeling stressed. Were there other signs, dilated eyes, drooling, whiskers curling forward instead of laying more flat along the muzzle, sweating paw prints?I've had a dog who did the same thing when he was "nervous" about a situation we were in.It stopped when we were out of what he perceived as an unsure situation.Summer or winter,it didn't matter. Good Luck, Ken Mathews

No, we haven't had another recurrence. I think it was the combination of smelling female urine and the excitement of being on the field. I have noticed some pretty excited sniffing going on by both Jethro and Skipper, which tells me there might be a bitch in heat in the neighbourhood.
