There are a couple of animals with fox in the name that are not "true" foxes (Arctic and Red, I believe; perhaps others), so maybe that's a possibility.
The genus vulpes are the true foxes (include: Bengal fox- Vulpes bengalensis, Blanford's fox- Vulpes cana, Cape fox- Vulpes chama, Corsac fox- Vulpes corsac, Fennec fox- Vulpes zerda, Kit fox- Vulpes macrotis, Pale fox- Vulpes pallida, Rüppell's fox- Vulpes rueppellii, Red fox- Vulpes vulpes, Swift fox- Vulpes velox, Tibetan sand fox- Vulpes ferrilata, Arctic Fox- Vulpes lagopus)
Dogs, wolves, coyotes and jackals can all interbreed. Many believe the Basenji is a domesticated jackal...because of the different foot pads and vocals.
But Foxes can't breed with dogs or other candids as far as I know...to other fox genuses, maybe but I can't remember. The Zorro is a large fox (but not a true fox more like a dog). The "Maned Wolf" is a tall fox. That english red fox was possibly a similar result as our large coyotes...they're adapting to how their environment is changed.
A tired dog is a good dog, a trained dog is a better dog.
