I am looking for information on her health, during her first heat. Should I feed her any supplements or vitamins, to make sure the "first cycle" does not interrupt her good health? Is it normal for her to lose a little weight? She is eating fine, I am just wondering if this is normal?
Heat is always different. My female gained six pounds last heat, then lost it immediately afterward. She lost weight during the first cycle she was with me. Appetite comes and goes, just like the attention span. Heat cycles should not affect the health of the dog; what will change is the amount of exercise that she gets (in my case, anyway...endurance subsides, so I don't push her).
I never did anything different with my girl's diet, just feed her healthy all the time she'll be fine. Like Duane Hall said, just go with the flow...mine had a one track mind and I just let her be for a while. I recommend driving to somewhere (like a school yard) to exercise her...in case you have loose neighborhood dogs.
Mine lost weight, was more aggressive (and affectionate), and at some point they blow their coat everywhere too. Its all natural.
A tired dog is a good dog, a trained dog is a better dog.
I don't change anything when my female is in heat...other then to be even more attentive to our surroundings & everything in it. She is never out in the yard unless I am with her. (even with a 6'
fence surrounding my yard)
Her exercise & stanama/endurance is the same. Appetite the same. Her work ethic is the same, maybe even a bit more intense then usual when doing bitework. Sometimes she blowes her coat, sometimes she doesn't. No weight changes either way. She is a reactive dog & can be a bit more reactive, that's about the only change I see.
The only other change is that she will play with my male which she usually doesn't do all that much normally. (Until I seperate them for the 4-5 days during her heat cycle that she would 'stand' for him.)
But each dog is an individual & behave accordingly.
