My wife and I are planning a camping trip for July or August (hope it cools down...). We will take our 2-year-old big baby GSD with us. The goal is to find a place where we can hike around and have him on the e-collar so he can roam a little.
We are in the Chicagoland area, northeast Illinois. This will be a driving trip, hopefully not more than 5-6 hours or so.
Does anyone know of a good campground or camper-friendly wildlife area in IL or WI? I guess we could head over to IA also. MN would probably be a stretch and I doubt IN has what we're looking for.
Any help appreciated!
p.s. Yes we will be stocking up on our Advantix beforehand.
We are narrowing down our search pretty quickly. It looks like either Peninsula State Park in Door County in Wisconsin, or Devil's Lake. Both look very nice. I would love to be able to rent a canoe and take the dog out on the boat with us. Devil's lake is a 3-hour drive compared to 5 hours to Peninsula so that weighs in DL's favor slightly for me.
We stopped at Devil's Lake on a cross country drive and really enjoyed it. This was in November so there wasn't much tourism activity. There are plenty of hiking and running trails and some neat cliff and talus areas with rock scrambling that my dogs enjoyed. The lake looked like it would have been excellent swimming but it was too cold at the time. There was also a farmstand just up the hill from the campground called 'Ski-hi' that had delicious local apples at the time, but probably sells other local fruits and veggies in the summer.
I was impressed with the amount of terrain at Devil's Lake. I always thought Wisconsin was flat. I'd highly recommend this park. I can't remember if there was a leash mandate- if I remember correctly leashes were required on campground trails, but not on the longer trails around the lake.
We only spent one night and moved on, but in the summer I could easily see spending a week or a few days enjoying this area.
I have lots of ideas for Michigan...ever been up to Sleeping Bear Dunes? I received some great advice about going there and it was very dog friendly. We liked it so much that even though we went in June, we are going again!
